Risk (Hasbro CD-ROM Version)

64 bit Install Guide

Like several of the other classic Hasbro board games for PC (Scrabble, Boggle, etc), you are unable to install Risk through the standard setup.exe program. Instead, you are told "This app can't run on your PC".

This message pops up if you try to run an old 16 bit app on a 64 bit Windows operating system. In some cases, you're simply out of luck (outside of installing a "virtual machine")

However, with many old games it is only the setup/installer program that is a 16 bit app, not the game itself. This means it is still possible to play that game on 64 bit Windows if you can manage to get its files and registry keys in the correct places. Risk is one of those instances.

Step #1 - Copying Game Files from CD

First, create a folder for the game on your hard drive. I have my game installed to C:\Games\Board\Risk, but you can create the folder anywhere so long as you reflect this in the registry key we'll be installing later.

Insert your Risk CD and go to file explorer. You need to copy the following folders to the hard drive -- "ANIMS" "BIN" "GAMEGFX" "PALETTES" "SAVEGAME" "SAVESETUP" and "VIDEO".

There are also two DLL files on the CD which need to be copied:

MCONNECT.DLL

MPN.DLL

Next, go to the "ENGLISH" folder on the CD and copy the RISK.EXE file.

Your Risk directory should look like this now:

Step #2 Editing the Registry

Next we have to set up the registry file.

Download the Risk registry key here

After you download the file, right click it and hit "edit." There are some important lines in this file to check before installing.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Hasbro Interactive\RISK]

"ABBOXPATH"="C:\\Games\\Board\\Risk\\VIDEO"

"BBOXPATH"="C:\\Games\\Board\\Risk\\ANIMS"

"CDPATH"="E:"

"RISKDIR"="C:\\Games\\Board\\Risk"

The ABBOXPATH, BBOXPATH and RISKDIR have to link to the correct directories on your hard drive. If you placed the game in a directory other than C:\Games\Board\Risk, you will need to adjust all of these lines to reflect your chosen directory.

The CDPATH is the drive letter for your CD rom drive. If your CD ROM drive is not E:, you will need to change this letter to reflect this.

When you have this file how you want it, save and double click it to install. If all went well, you should now be able to play the game.

Finally, you can right click your Risk file and set 640x480 resolution under its properties to make the game take up the full screen as opposed to the little box.

If you have questions or comments about this game, you can leave me a note at the message board.
