NASCAR 2000

NASCAR 2000 Playable w/DXWnd

NASCAR 2000 is another EA SPORTS title that broke after the XP days. When you launched the game executable a black box would appear, and that was it. All you could do was CTRL/ALT/DEL your way out. Bizarrely, if you held the ALT-F4 keys the main menu would appear, but the moment you let go of the keys, the game would freeze again.

I've tried and tried to come up with a compatibility patch to solve this, and I still don't have a true fix, but who needs a fix when you can have a long, drawn out workaround?

First things first - if you're using Windows 10, you need to download this no-cd/fixed exe for the game. Otherwise, it won't run at all.

This file was originally acquired from GameBurnWorld:

Unzip the replacement exe to your NASCAR 2000 directory and overwrite the original file.

Next, we need to download DXWnd - this is a special program which allows you to run full screen Windows applications in a window.

Download DXWnd here

Unzip the files anywhere and run dxwnd.exe

When the menu appears, click edit in the toolbar and then add from the dropdown.

At the target screen, enter the path to your NASCAR 2000.exe. Do this by clicking the three dots next to the path entry, then navigating to your NASCAR 2000 folder.

Highlight your NASCAR 2000.EXE and hit Open.

This is what you should be seeing at this point. DXWnd has a ton of additional options, but fortunately you shouldn't have to deal with any of them. Just click OK.

**Note - the one thing you absolutely do NOT want to do is select "Fullscreen only" mode. You're about to see why in a second.

So, press OK and you should now see an entry for NASCAR 2000.exe in your DxWnd menu. Double click it to launch - now comes the weird part.

If things go according to plan, you should get the same black box as before, except there will now be a title bar at the top. When you get the black screen, try edging your mouse to the right (or up, or down, or left). Eventually your cursor should "pop" out of the black box, back onto the desktop. Move your cursor to the title bar and move the window. It should "snap" (I don't know how else to describe it) into place and the intro will begin! Left click again to pass to the main menu.

Lastly, go to "Technical Settings" / "Display Settings" and turn off "Dynamic Track Lighting". The graphics will be a little glitchy otherwise. Now you should be race ready.

When you start a race you will be in a window, but press ESC to pause and you will be able to maximize.

Watch this video to see this process in action. Also note that you will always have to launch the game through DxWnd for this trick to work.
