Madden NFL 06

Error - Game Won't Start / Access Denied

On Windows 10, Madden NFL 06 either does not start, or it throws up an "Access Denied" error box. It asks you to login with administrator rights, but once you do so, nothing happens.

The issue is that Windows 10 dropped support for programs which use SafeDisc copyright protection, which includes several of the Madden games. Fortunately, we can get around this by downloading a fixed game executable from GameCopyWorld.

GameCopyWorld Madden NFL 06 Page Link

Scroll to the bottom of this page and download the following file, dated 19-08-2006:
Madden NFL 06 v1.0 & v2.0+ [US/ENGLISH] Fixed EXE

Inside this .RAR file is a "Crack" folder. Unzip the "mainapp.exe" file inside it to your Madden NFL 06 game directory  and select yes when you're asked if you wish to replace the exisiting file. If you want, you can make a copy of the original .exe beforehand, but it really doesn't matter -- the original will never work anyway.

Error - CreateDevice Failed / Device Does Not Support the Queried Technique

When starting the game, you might receive a black screen, followed by a "CreateDevice failed" error popup. Clicking through this popup leads to another box claiming your device "Does Not support the current technique." Clicking OK dumps you back to the desktop.

This seems to be a DirectX-related error. You can work around it by running the game through a program called DxWnd, which is available at SourceForge. Download it and unzip the contents to a folder of your choice.

Next, download this file and place it in your DxWnd/exports folder.

DxWnd Madden NFL 06 Profile

Run DxWnd. At the main main, click File/Import

Select the Madden NFL 06 profile from the list and click open.

You should see "Madden NFL 06" listed in the main menu with a green light next to it. Double click on the Madden NFL 06 line to start the game. If the game does not launch, try exiting DxWnd and re-running it as an administrator.

On my laptop I get a black screen for about 10 seconds before the intro video appears, so if you get a black screen initially, don't panic - eventually you should be greeted by the EA Sports intro followed by the main menu.

Hopefully, you'll be home free from here. Select your teams and hit the gridiron.

If you have questions or comments about this game, you can leave me a note at the message board.
