Battleship (Hasbro CD-ROM Version)

64 bit Install Guide

Battleship can't be installed through the setup.exe program inside of 64 bit Windows, but it is still possible to make the game playable.

Step #1 - Copying Game Files from CD

First, create the following path on your hard drive:

C:\Games\Board\Battleship

This is the directory we will be copying the game files to. Technically you can copy the game to any folder you wish, but the registry key I'm providing is set up to work out of this folder and this folder only.

Once the folders have been created, insert the Battleship CD and open your CD drive in File Explorer. Highlight the "PINP" and "SFX" folders and copy them. Return to the Battleship folder you have made on your hard drive and paste these folders inside it.

Back at the CD drive, open the "AMERICAN" folder. Copy the following files and paste them inside your Battleship directory.

BS.CNT

BS.EXE

MCONNECT.DLL

Go back to the CD one more time and copy the MPN.dll file from the CD's root directory to your (you guessed it) Battleship folder.

When you're finished, your game directory should look like this:

Step #2 - Add the Registry Keys

Next we have to install the registry keys for the game. These keys refer back to the user's CD drive letter, and the game will not work if this letter does not match. It's possible to edit this file in notepad, but to make things easier, just download the version of the key that matches your CD drive letter.

Download the Battleship registry key (CD Drive D:)

Download the Battleship registry key (CD Drive E:)

Download the Battleship registry key (CD Drive F:)

Download the Battleship registry key (CD Drive G:)

If you want to install the game to a directory other than the one I chose, you will have to make changes to this file. Right click on the reg file in File Explorer and hit edit to bring up a notepad window. These are the lines you will be concerned with

"BSDIR"="C:\\Games\\Board\\Battleship"
"PINPPATH"="C:\\Games\\Board\\Battleship\\PINP"
"SFXPATH"="C:\\Games\\Board\\Battleship\\SFX"

Alter these lines to reflect the path you copied the files to.

When you're ready, simply double-click on the reg file in File Explorer and click yes at this prompt to add the key to the registry.

At this point, you can try running the game by clicking on the BS.exe file. If the game doesn't load, or you receive this weird setpallet error, advance to the next step.

Step #3 - DxWnd Setup

To eliminate the setpallet error, we will need to use a program called DxWnd. Click on the link below to download it from SourceForge.

DxWnd Download - SourceForge.Net

Unzip the files to any folder, then run dxwnd.exe. At the main screen, click "Edit" from the menu bar and "Add" from the drop down menu.

Next, we need to create a profile for your Battleship game. Enter the path to your Bs.exe file in the "Path" field.

By default, "Run in Window" is selected here. To play in fullscreen mode, uncheck that and place a check next to "Fullscreen only"

Press OK to confirm your settings.

Once you're back at the menu, double click on the "Bs.exe" entry to start the game. Note that you will always have to have DxWnd running first before you play.

If the game does not run, try setting both the Bs.exe and dxwnd to run as administrator. For further help, or if you just have a question or comment about this game, please visit the message board.
